Solid Hardwood Seconds

Copeland Furniture carefully inspects each piece of furniture before shipping to a retail partner. Pieces that do not meet first-quality standards are designated "second quality" and made available through the Copeland Company Store in Bradford, Vermont.

Seconds are structurally sound but have imperfections that may take the form of:

  1. Excessive color variation in the wood.
    • In Cherry, the sapwood (younger, less-mature outer wood) is lighter than the heartwood and can appear almost white. It does not darken over time to match the rest of the piece.
    • Mineral stains or deposits are naturally occurring in Maple resulting gray or significantly darker areas in the finished piece.
  2. Slight dings or dents in the surface acquired during the building, finishing, or shipping process.
  3. Noticeably inconsistent drawer spacing in dressers and armoires.
  4. Repairs. On occasion, a knot in the wood needs to be filled, a highly visible glue joint in a panel, or a piece has been damaged and then repaired.
  5. Less than perfect joinery from an aesthetic perspective. The joinery is structurally sound but may have a small gap, chip, or split.
